Polychrome and vitrified hard-paste porcelain sculpture depicting a pair of elderly begging musicians, entirely hand-decorated, signed by the artist with an incised signature behind the base: "callé," and under the base with a crowned "n" in blue underglaze, the mark of giuseppe cappè's capodimonte factory. Note that the letter "a" in the signature is shaped like a fish, and the two "p"s resemble two "l"s, the signature used for pieces curated by giuseppe cappè himself, or at least during the artist's lifetime. An original piece by giuseppe cappè. This fabulous sculpture is quite large and heavy, crafted from the highest-quality porcelain, rich in feldspars, which allowed for the rich vitrification during the second firing at 1400 degrees. Its greatest beauty lies in the caricature-like style in which the couple is portrayed. Also noteworthy is the sculpture's high artistic quality, meticulously crafted down to the smallest details—the faces, hands, fingers, the bottle protruding from the pocket, the folds of the clothing, and the expressiveness of the faces. A beautiful sculpture, a collector's item.
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
giuseppe cappé is one of the most important figures in the italian porcelain scene of the second half of the 20th century. Born in 1921, he trained at the ipa and king porcelain factory in capodimonte. In 1959, he opened the "cappè porcellane artistica" factory, where he created numerous models in two main directions: a classical direction with subjects drawn from greek mythology, predominantly in white porcelain with details in pure gold, and a second with completely original modern subjects, always realistic but with his own style, tending towards irony, almost caricature, but always with a touch of sweetness and melancholy.
