A matched pair of Japanese Satsuma vases from the late Meiji period, circa 1890, decorated with finely painted figural scenes of courtly ladies within landscape reserves. The painting combines soft facial modelling with controlled line and detailed costume work.
The reserves are set against a deep black, lacquer-like ground densely enriched with gilt chrysanthemum and scrolling ornament. Cobalt-blue bands at the shoulders and gilded lips sharpen the silhouette, giving the pair a strong visual identity suited to both classic and contemporary interiors.
The bases are marked in gilt with 薩摩 (Satsuma) and 保土田 (Hodota), together with the circular Shimazu crest, associated with Hodota Shoten of Yokohama.
