This etching is part of Balli di Sfessania, Jacques Callot’s celebrated series depicting grotesque dancers inspired by the Neapolitan commedia dell’arte tradition. The figures Capitan Cardone (Cap. Cardoni) and Maramao are shown in an exaggerated duel-like dance, their contorted poses and expressive gestures emphasizing movement, satire, and theatricality. Callot’s refined line work and lively invention exemplify his mastery of etching and his influential role in the development of seventeenth-century printmaking.
