Dating from the 1950s–1960s and signed “Gerbino, Vallauris (A.M)”, this beautiful ceramic vase was produced at the atelier of Jean Gerbino (1876–1966), a major figure in 20th-century Vallauris ceramics and one of the most distinctive innovators of mosaic clay techniques.
About Jean Gerbino (1876–1966)
Born in Sicily into a family of potters, Gerbino trained from an early age before settling in Vallauris, where he worked notably with the Massier workshops. After periods working in Algeria and at Pichon in Uzès, he returned permanently to Vallauris in 1919. There, he devoted more than fifteen years of research to developing his highly original terres mêlées (mosaic clay) process.
In 1931, this work was awarded the Grand Prix de Paris at the Concours Lépine, firmly establishing his reputation.
Rather than relying on surface decoration or glaze, Gerbino constructed patterns from carefully assembled fragments of colored clay, creating dense, marble-like surfaces with exceptional depth and movement. This vase displays a finely balanced polychrome geometric composition in tones of green, blue, ochre, and warm brown. The softly rounded body and gently flared neck give the piece a calm, sculptural presence.
The vase is hand-signed “Gerbino” beneath the base and bears the impressed mark “Vallauris (A.M.)”, consistent with authentic post-war artisanal production from the workshop.
A refined and highly decorative example of mid-century Vallauris ceramic artistry, combining technical sophistication with strong historical resonance.
