This antique Dutch wooden cooper barrel is composed of wooden staves, brass hoops, and an articulated brass handle. A wooden bung is embossed Maassluis, Holland, authenticating its origin. The barrel is an appropriate size to hold firewood or kindling besides the fireplace, or umbrellas and canes in an entryway or mudroom. The one quirky catch to this highly decorative and mostly functional piece is that the bottom has fallen out, but its sturdiness and heavy weight will still hold items securely in place. Funny enough, I purchased this at a flea market and had my husband carry it to the car without realizing it was missing its base. We had a good laugh about that when I unloaded it! A solution could be to set a pie tin or something similar inside to protect the floor from its contents.
Maassluis is a Dutch town in the province of South Holland in the western Netherlands, which was historically important for trade. Wood staves were made in the town's 'Drawing House' or Mill for barrels used to export goods.
Dimensions: 17" x 13" x 13". Extends to 25" tall to the handle when it is in the upright position.
