The colorful enamel decoration depicts a scholar and attendant traveling from a secluded retreat toward a harbor, where ships rest beneath descending mountain peaks. Traditional buildings are nestled among trees, including one in full bloom, creating a composition reminiscent of a classical Chinese scroll painting.

The black outlining appears to be transfer-applied, while the enamel fills are entirely hand-painted, displaying excellent line quality and precision. The border is ornamented with a decorative pattern of dots and darts in vibrant colored enamels, enhancing the plate’s visual elegance.

The porcelain body is notably thin and translucent; when held to the light, the fine quality of the potting is clearly visible. The plate has an unglazed foot with a glazed base, and the foot rim shows traces of kiln grit fired in place—an authentic characteristic of the period. The base is hand-marked “CHINA” in iron red, dating the plate to between 1891 and circa 1920.

CONDITION
The plate is in excellent antique condition with no cracks, chips, or repairs and rings clearly when tapped. There are a few tiny surface scratches consistent with age and gentle cabinet wear, along with minor kiln-fired imperfections such as small pimples. The enamels and glazes remain fresh, bright, and well-preserved.
