This antique Chinese porcelain cabinet plate is exceptionally finely painted and thinly potted, featuring a richly detailed landscape scene of a scholar’s retreat set near the mountains. The colorful enamel decoration depicts a scholar and attendant traveling from a secluded retreat toward a harbor, where ships rest beneath descending mountain peaks. Traditional buildings are nestled among trees, including one in full bloom, creating a composition reminiscent of a classical Chinese scroll painting.
The black outlining appears to be transfer-applied, while the enamel fills are entirely hand-painted, displaying excellent line quality and precision. The border is ornamented with a decorative pattern of dots and darts in vibrant colored enamels, enhancing the plate’s visual elegance.
The porcelain body is notably thin and translucent; when held to the light, the fine quality of the potting is clearly visible. The plate has an unglazed foot with a glazed base, and the foot rim shows traces of kiln grit fired in place—an authentic characteristic of the period. The base is hand-marked “CHINA” in iron red, dating the plate to between 1891 and circa 1920.
**An identical plate is also available and may be purchased as a matching pair.**
