At the center of the composition the Sun radiates outward, illuminating the orbits of the known planets, rendered with precise proportional calculations and extensive Latin explanatory text. The diagram reflects contemporary scientific understanding, incorporating Copernican theory as refined by later astronomers such as Huygens. Surrounding the central solar system is a broad zodiacal ring populated with finely engraved allegorical figures representing the twelve signs of the zodiac, each delicately hand colored. The outer margins include additional astronomical diagrams, observational instruments, and symbolic imagery linking astronomy, theology, and natural philosophy. The dramatic baroque composition, with its radiant sunburst and richly colored clouds and figures, exemplifies the Homann firm’s ambition to present scientific knowledge in a visually compelling and decorative form. This plate is closely related to examples recorded in institutional collections and on the market, including copies attributed to the Homann–Doppelmayr collaboration from the first half of the 18th century. Such celestial maps were intended for educated collectors, libraries, and cabinets of curiosity, serving both as scientific references and as statements of intellectual prestige. Today, Homann celestial charts are highly sought after for their historical importance, decorative power, and strong appeal in both classical and contemporary interiors. This example is further enhanced by its early mounting on handmade paper, which lends the piece a refined and stable presentation. Condition Report Good overall condition. Light age-related toning and minor surface wear consistent with 18th-century paper. Original hand coloring remains strong. Central vertical fold visible, as issued. Laid down on old handmade paper; no major losses observed. Framing Tips This work benefits from a generous mat to emphasize the circular composition and the surrounding zodiac. An ebonized, dark walnut, or black frame provides excellent contrast, while UV-protective glazing is recommended to preserve the hand coloring.
