The Rimini Blue vase, designed by Aldo Londi for Bitossi in the 1960s, is an example of precise modernist geometry and a clearly marked contrast in materials. The rectangular body is divided into two parts: the upper part, made of matte, warm white ceramic, rhythmically grooved vertically and subtly carved, emphasizes the handcrafted technique. The lower part of the vase and the sides are covered with Rimini Blue glaze – an intense blue with a distinctive, rough texture with natural pores and depressions. The glaze in the lower parts transitions smoothly into a bold navy blue at the base. The upper edge and interior are finished with an azure-colored glaze with a discreet satin sheen. The form is devoid of decorative fittings or handles, and the proportions and sharp lines emphasize the modernist origins and artisanal style of Bitossi's production. The design communicates an economy of form juxtaposed with the intensity of the glaze. The distinct vertical grooves and varied textures are reminiscent of natural phenomena – cracks in rock, wood grain, or the undulating sea shore. Rimini Blue acts as a concentrated pigment here – it introduces tension and directs the eye to the lower segment, while leaving plenty of space for details of workmanship and chiaroscuro. Through the contrast of Mediterranean blue and restrained lines, the vase conveys a balance between austerity and color expression. It can be placed solo on a solid wood chest of drawers, where it will showcase the richness of the glaze and the texture of the ceramics. It also works well surrounded by other vessels from the Rimini Blue series, creating a graphic, collectible set. It is worth combining it with rusty ceramics, light linen, or brass accents to bring out the depth of color and balance the coolness of the blue. Its modernist character is emphasized by the proximity of steel or glass lighting and the minimalist color scheme of the interior, allowing the form and details of the glaze to shine through.
