Drawn by Carlo Pellegrini, known by his signature “Ape,” these portraits exemplify the refined caricature style and visual authority that made Vanity Fair one of the most influential illustrated journals of the Victorian era. The three figures are identified on the prints by their original Vanity Fair captions and titles. The left-hand portrait (March 12, 1870, Statesmen No. 43) depicts the Speaker of the House of Commons, described as “The first of the Commoners of England,” shown seated in full judicial-style robes, conveying institutional authority and tradition. The central portrait (March 19, 1870, Statesmen No. 44) represents a senior parliamentary figure described as “A professor of strong languages,” portrayed standing confidently with top hat and cane, capturing the theatrical presence and wit typical of Victorian political life. The right-hand portrait (March 26, 1870, Statesmen No. 45) shows another prominent statesman, captioned “Highly respectable,” presented in sober dress with papers in hand, emphasizing respectability and public duty. All three figures are shown full-length against restrained, uncluttered backgrounds, creating a strong vertical rhythm and a visually balanced composition when displayed together. The muted palette of creams, greys, blacks, and warm browns makes the set particularly suitable for interiors, whether in a study, library, hallway, or above a sideboard. Offered together as a matched horizontal suite, the group has immediate decorative impact and conveys a sense of history, authority, and character without visual excess. Printed in London in 1870, these works combine period authenticity with timeless decorative appeal. The set is offered as a group, making it an ideal ready-made wall installation for collectors or interior designers. Condition report: Overall very good condition. Light age-related toning and minor surface wear consistent with late 19th-century chromolithographs. Clean impressions with good margins. Framing tips: Best displayed as a horizontal trio in matching frames. Soft ivory or light taupe mats with simple black, dark brown, or antique gilt frames create a refined, interior-friendly presentation.
