This imposing wooden sculpture from the Dogon people of Mali is a unique piece in the form of a large, tiered tobacco jar, richly decorated with human figures and a horseman at the top. Traditionally used for storing tobacco, this piece combines ritual function and artistic expression. Each spherical tier is supported by small stylized figures, likely representing ancestors or members of the community, expressing the link between transmission, protection, and social hierarchy.
The horseman at the top embodies power, wisdom, or the figure of the guardian ancestor. The entire piece, magnificently carved in three parts, reveals refined geometric engravings, typical of Dogon aesthetics.
