Gouache sketch on paper, framed
This expressive work is an early gouache esquisse by Georges Rouault, one of the most important French modernists of the 20th century. Titled Face à Face, the composition presents two confronting figures rendered in Rouault’s unmistakable visual language—bold, almost carved forms, heavy contours, and a restrained, somber palette.
Created circa 1930, this intimate sketch reflects Rouault’s deep interest in human psychology and moral tension. The figures appear simultaneously monumental and vulnerable, a recurring theme in his work from this period. The painterly handling and raw immediacy suggest a preparatory study, offering rare insight into Rouault’s working process.
