The name "Claude Lorraine" is meticulously inscribed in the wood, though its relation to the "father of European landscape paintings" is unknown. Though possibly Lorrain's study for a larger painting, this small original oil is more likely a later painting done after his style by his admirer and aspiring Italian artist.
