I recently acquired the life work of the boston artist ben black (1922-2003). Known for his clown drawings and paintings, many of which were used by royal doulton, he also did quite a few illustrations for calendars and other printed material. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. I have decided to list works across the spectrum of the kind of work black did to show his various styles. This is a wonderful abstract work of which I have only found a couple examples that black did. A mixed media of pen & ink, watercolor, and magic marker, this is an incredible detailed view. Just a stunning attention to detail throughout the entire painting. Image measures 14 1/4 x 19 1/2 inches in perfect as created condition. Signed and dated lower right in pen below the image. Work is on bainbridge illustration board measuring 16 3/4 x 22 inches. Taped verso into a matte that is complimentary. Matte measures 22 x 26 1/2 inches. If you collect ben black or are interested in his other works, check my store for the others I am offering.
For those not familiar with the artist, I have created a small biography based on the gallery exhibition pamphlets and newspaper articles I acquired with the collection. "ben black (1922-2003). Born in boston, he graduated massachusetts college of art in 1947 after serving in world war 2. He began his career as an art director in one of boston's leading advertising firms, later leaving to create his own studio where his works were included in the new yorker, saturday evening post, reader's digest and others, establishing himself as a leading american illustrator. He had many solo and group exhibitions throughout new england and his work is collected throughout the world. Originally known for his clowns, he created a limited edition series of plates for royal daulton as well as clown figurines for schmidt. He has also created numerous designs for hallmark cards."
