Artist Biography
Henri Rondel (1857–1919) was a prominent French painter of the Belle Époque, celebrated primarily for his sensual and refined portraiture of women. Born on February 2, 1857, in Avignon, France. He moved to Paris to study at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts. He was a pupil of the renowned academic master Jean-Léon Gérôme, whose influence is evident in Rondel’s technical precision and classical approach to the human form. Artistic Style and Subjects Refined Portraiture: Rondel specialized in portraits of elegant "fin de siècle" Parisienne women. His work is characterized by the depiction of luminous skin tones, atmospheric backgrounds, and delicate fabrics such as sheer silks and lace.He was known for capturing "provocative" or sensual subjects, often featuring red-haired models (a recurring motif in his work).Significant pieces include Portrait du président Félix Faure, Jeune femme au chevalet, and various "Young Beauty" portraits. He was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon and achieved international recognition by exhibiting at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. In 1897, he was appointed a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur, one of France's highest marks of distinction. He was a member of the Société Internationale de Peinture et Sculpture. Rondel died on May 28, 1919, in Caen, France. Today, his paintings are frequently featured in major auction houses like Christie's and continue to be highly sought after for their representation of French elegance and academic mastery.
