John s bower was a new england artist who worked from new hampshire to new york in the 1840-1860 period. He was known for these pastel landscapes as well as fruit still lives. This might be the finest of all of his works that I have come across. A large pastel on paper measuring 28 x 21 inches. Signed lower right. A great scene of a fisherman on the sides of the river with wonderful mountains in the landscape. Outstanding condition. Original presentation as it was done 150 years ago. Gold gilt frame is in excellent condition with just some minor losses including both lower corners. Original wood backing looks to be untouched. Frame measures 32 x 25 1/2 inches. See less
