This early 19th-century engraved sheet depicts a complete narrative cycle from the life of Joan of Arc (Jungfrau von Orleans), published in 1813 as part of the German literary Taschenbuch Minerva. The composition presents four sequential scenes illustrating Joan’s divine calling, her recognition at court, her leadership in battle, and her martyrdom, conceived as a unified visual narrative. Such narrative sheets were characteristic of prestigious German Taschenbücher, which combined literature, moral reflection, and finely engraved illustrations for an educated Romantic readership. Joan of Arc held particular appeal in early 19th-century German culture as a symbol of spiritual conviction, heroism, and tragic destiny. The imagery reflects this Romantic interpretation through idealized figures, expressive gestures, and dramatic contrasts of light. The sheet survives intact as originally issued, preserving the full narrative format. Many comparable examples were later cut apart for framing, making complete sheets increasingly scarce. The engravings are printed on period paper and mounted on a secondary support, as commonly encountered with early 19th-century book illustrations.
