Item :
a delightful, unique asymmetrical majolica vase, entirely wheel-shaped, glazed with a rich majolica glaze, and hand-decorated in the art deco style. It features a jockey, a horse, and a harness horse. Finished in pure gold and glazed, it dates back to the early 20th century. It was made and signed under the base by the grazia deruta factory. The two smaller decorations, depicting two charming little dogs, are particularly unique, all decorated with small dots on the inside. This decoration was imitated by the herend factory, which has created a veritable collection of objects decorated in this style. The jockey on a sulky and a harness horse are also beautiful, with a style that strongly recalls the stylized art deco figures of the great giò ponti and settimio rometti.
useful information for appraising this item:
this vase is attributed to serafino volpi, artistic director of the grazia factory. In fact, the brand name features the word "deruta" written with a u that resembles a v. Serafino volpi signed his name and the word "deruta" when he opened his factory, and deruta with a u shaped like a v when he was artistic director of the "grazia di deruta" store. Furthermore, the style is entirely that of the artist. To demonstrate this, through some online research, we found a similar vase, in art deco style, signed with the artist's name and the exact same wording "dervta". It was listed on the "italia design" website for €550, with the listing title "s. Volpi de ruta, ceramic vase, rampant horse on a green background, gold, golden yellow interior, 28 cm, 1940s". Also note the similarity of the mouth of the vase mentioned above to ours: both are divided into two rims, although ours is asymmetrical. It features the same pure gold finishes, the same art deco decorations, and the same rich glaze, in aquamarine green rather than pink. Serafino volpi's deco vases are extremely rare and produced in very few examples, belonging to his early productions. Later, the artist specialized in other types of decorations very different from these. Finally, we found two deco-style jugs, with a pure gold finish and a white background, but with a different glaze and decoration from our vase. They were listed for €400-600 by arcadia srl auction house in rome, italy, at the "20th century design and decorative arts" auction held in june 2020, lot 168 entitled "serafino volpi - jugs, 1950". This gives an idea of the value of the ceramics created by this artist.
(by googling the information about the items we list, especially the title of the auction or sale listing in the same language as ours, the date, the lot number, and the auction house or the name of the sales website, you will most often be able to find and view the items mentioned.)
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
the "società anonima grazia" artistic majolica factory in deruta has been run since the second half of the 19th century by ceramist giuseppe grazia, heir to an ancient family of majolica makers. It is one of the oldest and still operating deruta factories ever founded. In 1919, he was called to work with the serafino volpi company, formerly the technical director of the "maioliche deruta" factory. This piece has an attribution mark,
