a magnificent pair of murano sommerso blown glass vases, attributed in our opinion to the famous artist and designer flavio poli, crafted using the artist's classic technique, with colored glass on the inside and clear glass on the outside. The mouths of the vases are particularly beautiful, handcrafted by cutting the glass and stretching the ends with pincers. The workmanship is of the highest quality; no hollows, pincer marks, or crushed areas are visible, not even at the edges of the mouths, where the glass has been stretched the most and therefore is most likely to leave marks. The two vases are absolutely perfect, completely rounded, with the same thickness across the entire mouth of each, despite having been cut and stretched with pincers—a highly refined craftsmanship that allows them to be attributed to this celebrated murano artist, who rarely signed his works. The pair dates to the early decades of the 20th century.
useful information for evaluating the item:
from our online research, we find that the eight highest auction results achieved by flavio poli, as found on art price, range from €12,000 to a maximum of €65,000, excluding the 25-30% buyer's premium. This gives an idea of the importance of the glass pieces created by this artist. We also found several vases very similar in mouth shape and artistic workmanship to ours, all selling for very high prices. Finally, we found a vase, different in shape and workmanship, but very similar in color, with the same purple hue as our vase, the same shades and similar hues, sold for over €18,000 at wright auctions in chicago, usa, at the "important italian glass: the primavera collection" auction on november 22, 2016, lot no. 162, titled "valva vase 9814 (1954)". This is to give you an idea of the value of similar objects. Please note that in most of the auction results, in the "details" section, where it is usually indicated whether the object is signed, included in a catalog, or belongs to a private collection, it does not say "signed" or "signato" in english. This means that they are all unsigned vases, like ours, simply attributed to the artist.
(by googling the information about the items we list, especially the title of the auction or sale listing in the same language as ours, the date, the lot number, and the auction house or the name of the sales website, you will most often be able to find and view the items mentioned.)
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
flavio poli first worked for i.v.a.m. (industrie vetraie artistiche murano), which in 1934 merged with barovier seguso e ferro vetri and in 1937 took the name seguso vetri d'arte. Flavio poli was the first glass artist to introduce the nude into glass sculptures and is undoubtedly considered one of the most brilliant and original artists on the italian glass scene in the first half of the 20th century. For those interested in learning more, simply visit wikipedia, which contains numerous autobiographical notes on the artist, including a photo of a vase very similar to our pair. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
