Item :
A magnificent vitrified majolica centerpiece vase, entirely hand-crafted on a lathe, finished with rich metallic lustres in shades of ruby red and Sienese gold. It is entirely hand-decorated with two different figures on the two central sides of the vase, both depicted holding a letter. On the back of one of the two figures is a parchment with the inscription "Ezech\. - \.iello," probably Ezekiel (one of the major prophets of the Bible), and the final part of another unknown word. On the sides of the two central decorations are four large griffins, all in light bas-relief, and two harpies on the other two shorter sides, entirely hand-decorated with brush tip. The vase's four legs are shaped like lion's paws. Signed under the base with an ancient underglaze blue mark of the Rubboli factory, created by Paolo Rubboli, its founder and greatest exponent, in the late 19th century.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Paolo Rubboli (1838–1890) was an Italian ceramist and craftsman. He worked in Gualdo Tadino and is remembered for having revived, in the 19th century, the technique of gold and ruby red lustres, which had been brought to great artistic heights by Master Giorgio Andreoli between the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1870, he founded "Rubboli," an artistic ceramics factory operating in Gualdo Tadino, considered one of the most important still active in Gualdo Tadino. In the last photos, we've provided additional historical information about the Rubboli factory for those who would like to learn more, including many of the trademarks used, including ours, used, as noted in the notes, before 1920, one of the factory's first and oldest trademarks.
