Dimensions: height 4.5 cm, width 22 cm, depth 29.5 cm.

The finish is understated and chic: a deep black interior with a warm orange/amber exterior, completed with a sparkling border.

The original leaflet is included and explains the background and craftsmanship of Wakasa-nuri—an intensive lacquer technique in which multiple layers are built up and polished to achieve a rich gloss and a remarkable sense of depth.

The gold inscription on the inside of the lid indicates that this piece was given as a wedding gift: a commemorative item presented by the governor of Tochigi Prefecture together with his partner. A discreet and appealing provenance that adds extra character to the object.

Today, it makes a beautifully refined storage box for letters, documents, photographs, cards, calligraphy or writing supplies, or small valuables you like to keep neatly together on a desk, sideboard, or shelf.

The lacquer box is in very good condition with minimal signs of use, consistent with age and careful storage.
