With our highest compliments and utmost honors, Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this superb late 18th / early 19th century antique Mahogany drop leaf table. The table was made CA 1790-1810 in New England and possibly connected to the school of Nathan Lombard, whose shop and contemporaries favored neoclassical motifs & distinctive geometric inlays including stars, fans, patera, etc. executed with precision and restraint. The apron is centered by an inlaid six-pointed star meticulously hand-cut and affixed to the table. We handle a tremendous amount of furniture every year and this star motif is an uncommon and highly desirable design most often encountered on the finest Massachusetts and Rhode Island case furniture of the period.
The Mahogany on either side of the apron surrounding the stars showcases an attractive grain pattern. One side has bold dark striations, and the other has dramatic sweeping arches. The bottom of the apron has an intricate compound inlay. Each leaf is supported by finger joint shuttles that are built into the table box. The hinges & screws are original to the table without any evidence of ever being distributed or moved. If you’ve been in the market for a unique & interesting drop leaf table, we would strongly recommend this example for your consideration. We have this offered for sale at only a couple hundred dollars more than your run of the mill Pembroke table . We handle a significant volume of early American furniture each year, and examples displaying this level of design sophistication, regional character, and fine condition are becoming increasingly difficult to acquire. The table is in wonderful condition with our only notes being minor surface wear. The table measures 20 1/2” wide x 35 3/4” deep x 28 1/2” tall. When the leaves are locked up the table measures 38 3/8” wide x 35 3/4” deep.
