A stunning majolica ceramic plate, with heavy, rich glazes, expertly acid-etched to create a contour on the rim in shades of gray and green. This highlights the central portion of the plate, where a very voluminous dark red enamel on a black background frames a stylized female bust with a veiled hat, reminiscent of Modigliani's paintings. The face, veil, and skin are hand-decorated with white enamel, while the headdress and dress are also heavily acid-etched with lava stone enamel. This piece dates to the first half of the 20th century. It is signed on the back of the base both with an airbrush "Melis," a poorly executed and barely visible signature, and again by hand "Melis," created by Melchiorre Melis, a prominent Sardinian artist.
