A one-of-a-kind antique, hand-painted, reverse painting on glass depicting Saint John the Baptist as a child, shown with his staff and lamb beside flowing water. Water is a central symbol associated with Saint John because of his role in baptizing Jesus in the River Jordan. Even in childhood, his placement near water visually prefigures his future ministry and symbolizes spiritual cleansing, renewal, and divine preparation.
On the reverse is an attached paper inscribed in old Portuguese with its provenance:
“De Meinha Tia Amada Violante Freira do Convento do Senhor Canto Cristho Sao Miguel (Acores)”
The writer of the inscription received this painting from her beloved aunt Violante, a nun in the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Esperança (associated with the Igreja do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres) in São Miguel, Azores, Portugal. The Order of Saint Clare nuns occupied this convent from about 1540 to 1894.
Reverse paintings on glass depicting Catholic saints were created across Europe as folk devotional art, painted by local artisans. These works are characterized by their naïve, heartfelt style, vibrant color, and direct spiritual expression. Often set in humble wooden frames, they were intended for personal devotion in the home, displayed in prayer corners or small household altars. Today, they are cherished for their authentic charm, intimate presence, and connection to everyday faith.
Perfect for a meditation space, prayer corner, nursery or as a gift to celebrate a baptism or other spiritual milestone. Vibrant, colorful, and full of charm, this antique devotional artwork brings history, faith, and beauty into the home. Lovely as a stand-alone piece and even better as part of a collection.
