This antique needlework sampler is a hand-embroidered textile traditionally made as part of a young girl’s education during the late 18th or 19th century. Samplers served both as practice pieces and as lasting records of literacy and needlework skill, often incorporating alphabets, decorative borders, and symbolic imagery. This example features an alphabet border, floral urns, and a prominent central house motif, surrounded by smaller decorative elements that may represent garden features, fences, or symbolic forms commonly found in period samplers.
Worked in colored threads on a fabric ground using cross-stitch and related embroidery techniques, the sampler reflects the domestic and educational traditions of early American or English needlework. The house motif is typically interpreted as a symbol of home, stability, or the place where the stitcher lived or studied, while floral elements often reference hope and affection. The sampler is set behind glass in a square wood frame with gilt accents, and a handwritten note regarding provenance is affixed to the reverse, adding historical interest to this well-preserved example of early textile folk art.
