Elegant antique candlesticks dating to the late 19th–early 20th century, a period when Art Nouveau and Beaux-Arts classicism coexisted in European decorative arts. While often grouped with Art Nouveau due to their era, the design is in the Neoclassical tradition.
Each candelabrum features gracefully scrolling arms, stylized foliate detailing, and a shell-form base with repeating medallion motifs. Executed in heavy cast metal, gilt brass or bronze with a richly aged patina, the candlesticks retain a softly worn gilt surface that enhances the depth of the casting typical of quality European production of the period.
The sculptural foot is richly cast with alternating circular floral medallions and stylized petal forms, each medallion containing an abstract botanical emblem inspired by classical rosettes and palmettes. The upper foot features refined fluting reminiscent of classical columnar architecture, reinforcing the emphasis on symmetry, order, and timeless proportion.
The central stem of each piece incorporates an integrated circular medallion with a stylized “V” motif. Rather than a literal monogram, this element appears to be a decorative or symbolic device incorporated into the original casting—an approach commonly seen in Continental European Art Nouveau metalwork, where abstract emblems were used for visual balance and ornamentation rather than maker identification.
Each candle cup is threaded and removable, indicating the original convertible design intended for use with either oil inserts or standard candles. The oil inserts are no longer present, as is typical for pieces of this age, and the candlesticks are offered today in their candle configuration. The quality of the casting, depth of relief, and construction are consistent with Continental European production, likely French or Belgian, circa 1895–1910.
