Paul Klee ( 1879 - 1940 ) the Swiss born Modernist artist is attributed to creating some of the most original and colorful paintings of The Twentieth Century. Klee was an educator at the famous Bauhaus School in Germany. His work reflects the ideas of Symbolism, Expressionism, Cubism, as well the simplicity of The Bauhaus designs. Artworks by Klee are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
This volume presents some the finest of Paul Klee's watercolors, reproduced with the loving attention they deserve. The color plates are printed in six to eight colors, and with remarkable fidelity preserve the artist's unique and always surprising adventures in this medium. Another element in this special book is a group of Klee's delicate, wispy drawings, beautifully reproduced in black-and-white.
The text presents the quintessence of Klee, with the artist's own " creative credo ", in which he records his attitude toward his art. His creative impulse is represented by a selection of his poems, regarded as verbal extensions of his pictorial imagery and fantasy. The remainder of the text includes an essay by Werner Haftmann, one of the foremost authorities on Twentieth Century Art, and commentary to accompany each watercolor written by a group of distinguished Klee experts : Carola Giedion-Weckler, Will Grohmann, George Schmidt, and Werner Schmalenbach.
Altogether, this beautifully produced and joyous art book is a strikingly fitting exploration of the artist and his exquisite singular style.
