The Pupilles were originally orphaned sons of soldiers, raised, educated, and trained under military discipline, embodying Napoleon’s vision of loyalty, merit, and the continuity of the Empire. Although not front-line troops, they represented the moral and ideological future of the Grande Armée and held a powerful place in Napoleonic iconography. The figure is shown in full standing uniform, resting his musket beside a low stone wall, set within a sparse landscape. The dark green coat with contrasting facings, tall shako with insignia, and neatly rendered equipment are depicted with great precision. The calm, almost reflective posture distinguishes this image from more overtly martial scenes, emphasizing discipline, training, and imperial identity rather than combat. The careful hand-colouring highlights the uniform details while preserving the clarity of the engraved line. This print was published in Paris in 1843 as part of *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M.
