Grossi became renowned throughout Europe for his bold political humour and his ability to transform complex geopolitical tensions into vivid and theatrical scenes. The print shows a dramatic confrontation between a Russian general and his Ottoman counterpart, each moving miniature soldiers across a tabletop battlefield. The expressive faces, exaggerated gestures and meticulous hand-colouring combine to create a lively and humorous narrative that remains instantly engaging nearly 150 years later. Beyond its satire, the image reflects European perspectives on international politics in the late nineteenth century, when illustrated caricature played a central role in shaping public opinion. This impression is notable for its fresh colour, strong lines and excellent overall condition for a sheet of this size (approximately 40.5 x 59.5 cm / 15.7 x 23.4 inches). with its large format and striking palette, the work has exceptional decorative presence and is ideally suited for framing. Examples from Il Papagallo with such vibrant hand-colouring have become increasingly scarce, and Grossi’s caricatures are now sought after by collectors of political art, satirical illustration and nineteenth-century print culture. A historically significant, visually arresting and highly decorative work—perfect for collectors, design interiors and anyone drawn to the great tradition of European caricature.
