De Lairesse was one of the most important artistic theorists of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and his teachings on proportion, anatomy, and classical form shaped academic art education throughout Europe. The plate presents four studies of the male torso, shown from slightly varied angles and viewpoints. Each figure focuses on the muscular structure of the chest, abdomen, shoulders, and back, allowing students to compare anatomical form, tension, and balance across different poses. The heads and limbs are omitted to concentrate attention on the torso itself, a common academic approach intended to isolate and study specific anatomical elements. Executed with refined line engraving and controlled cross-hatching, the figures display a strong sense of volume and clarity. The subtle modulation of light and shadow demonstrates the principles of form and relief central to academic drawing practice. Rather than medical illustration, this plate belongs to the tradition of artistic anatomy, created as a teaching model for painters, draughtsmen, and engravers studying the idealized human body. Plates from the German editions of de Lairesse’s work were widely used in academies and workshops and were often heavily handled, making well-preserved impressions increasingly uncommon. Today, such prints are appreciated both as historical documents of art education and as visually compelling graphic works suitable for display. Condition report: Good antique condition. Light, even age-related toning throughout the sheet. Minor scattered spotting and small stains, mainly in the margins. Some light handling wear and faint creases consistent with age. Margins present. The engraved images remain crisp and well-defined. A clear plate mark is visible. Framing tips: This plate frames very well in a classic or contemporary interior. A walnut, ebonized, or black wooden frame with a wide off-white or light grey mat complements the warm tone of the paper and enhances the anatomical detail. Museum glass is recommended for protection and reduced glare. Technique: Line engraving Maker: After Gérard de Lairesse, from the German edition of Principes de dessin, circa 1745 See less
