Designed for the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2021 and refined for everyday life, this bench is carved from a single Douglas fir board so the seat and legs read as one continuous, coherent form.
The legs and seat are kept to consistent dimensions while the rail retains a subtle, natural variation, producing a calm, unified silhouette that reveals the timber’s grain and life. A half sliding dovetail joint connects leg to seat, a visible structural detail that both restrains wood movement and celebrates precision joinery, turning a functional necessity into a quiet moment of craftsmanship.
The design is deliberately simple, pared back to avoid visual interference with surrounding furniture or exhibition displays, to minimise material waste, and to allow efficient fabrication, yet its restraint gives it a strong presence: an architectural object that invites pause and supports conversation.
