This is a striking brutalist Icelandic lava vase produced by Glit HF. Founded in 1958 by Ragnar Kjartansson, Einar Eliasson, and Pétur Saemundsen, Glit was the only ceramics manufacturer in Iceland at the time.
The clay used for this piece is made from pumice sourced from Icelandic volcanoes. Its distinctive, rugged texture is achieved by incorporating genuine lava, which is collected from the edge of an active volcano. The vase pictured features a vibrant turquoise glaze that transitions into an earthy brown at the base and a glossy green at the top.
This type of ceramic is characteristic of the mid-century modern and brutalist styles of the 1960s and 1970s. This piece has an attribution mark,
