The composition captures the contrast between these two specialist roles within the light infantry: the Voltigeur, trained for agility, skirmishing, and forward deployment, and the Carabinier, a taller, more heavily equipped soldier selected for strength and steadiness in combat. Both figures are rendered with great attention to uniform detail, from the distinctive shakos with plumes and regimental insignia to the carefully observed cut of jackets, cross-belts, and equipment packs. The Voltigeur’s lighter, more flexible appearance contrasts subtly with the Carabinier’s more robust bearing and prominent headgear. In the background, additional infantry figures and a marching column provide context, reinforcing the sense of movement and campaign life rather than a static parade scene. This print originates from *Histoire de l’Empereur Napoléon* by P.-M. Laurent de l’Ardèche, published in Paris in 1843, with illustrations after designs by Horace Vernet. Vernet was the leading French military artist of the 19th century and closely associated with the Napoleonic legend. His work is valued for its accuracy, energy, and ability to humanize soldiers while preserving strict historical fidelity in uniforms and equipment. Although published later, the series reflects careful research and contemporary memory of the Grande Armée at its peak. A strong collector’s piece for those interested in Napoleonic infantry, French military uniforms, or historically accurate 19th-century hand-coloured engravings. It also pairs well with other light infantry or Guard subjects from the same series for a coherent wall display. Condition report: Good condition. Light, even age toning to the paper with minor scattered foxing, mainly in the margins. The hand colouring remains fresh and well defined. Margins intact. No significant tears or losses observed. Framing tips: An antique-style walnut or dark gilt frame with a soft ivory or light grey mat will complement the paper tone and enhance the blues, reds, and yellows of the uniforms. Particularly effective when framed as part of a grouped Napoleonic infantry display. Technique: Hand-coloured engraving Maker: After Horace Vernet, France, Paris, 1843 See less
