De Lairesse was one of the most important artistic theorists of his time, and his treatises on drawing and proportion shaped academic art education across Europe for decades after his death. The upper portion of the plate presents schematic diagrams illustrating the proportional construction of the human skull. These geometric outlines, marked with reference letters and axes, were intended to guide students in understanding the underlying structure of the head before rendering it in finished form. Below, four carefully engraved views of the skull are shown, including frontal, three-quarter, profile, and rear perspectives. The skulls are rendered with refined line work and subtle cross-hatching, emphasizing bone structure, cavities, and volume with clarity and restraint. This print belongs to the tradition of artistic anatomy, rather than medical illustration. It was designed as an instructional tool for painters, draughtsmen, and engravers, reflecting the Enlightenment emphasis on rational observation, proportion, and classical ideals. Plates from the German editions of de Lairesse’s work were widely used in academies and workshops and are now increasingly scarce, as they were often heavily handled and discarded. with its balanced composition, calm tonal range, and intellectual clarity, the plate appeals today to collectors of anatomical prints, art theory, and early academic drawing, as well as to interior designers seeking historically grounded graphic works with a timeless aesthetic. Condition report: Good antique condition. Light, even age-related toning throughout the sheet. Minor scattered spotting and small stains, mainly in the margins. A few faint creases and soft handling wear consistent with age. Margins present. The engraved image remains crisp and well-defined. A visible plate mark is present. Framing tips: This print frames beautifully in a scholarly or contemporary interior. A natural oak, walnut, or black frame with a wide off-white or light grey mat complements the warm paper tone and enhances the precision of the engraving. Museum glass is recommended to protect the fine line work and reduce glare.
