Design & Aesthetic: The Mediterranean Connection
This towering 50 cm floor vase (Model 609-50) is a rare example of the "Scandia" decor, famously known among collectors as Bay Keramik’s homage to Bitossi’s Rimini Blu. The vase is finished in a vibrant, multi-tonal turquoise and azure glaze that captures the shifting colors of the Mediterranean Sea. The intricate geometric relief patterns—composed of repeating bands of stylized "Runic" or "Arabesque" motifs—allow the turquoise glaze to pool and break, creating a brilliant, shimmering depth.
Historical Provenance:
Designed by the legendary Bodo Mans, this piece represents the height of Bay Keramik's artistic output. Mans’ exposure to the Madoura workshop (Picasso’s studio) is evident in the sculptural, tactile quality of this vase. While most German pottery of the era leaned toward "Brutalist" browns, this series was a daring celebration of color and light, designed to serve as a high-art centerpiece in modern homes.
Scale & Presence:
At half a meter tall, this is a "Palace-scale" ceramic. The 609 form is characterized by its wide, stable base (23 cm) and a sophisticated silhouette that tapers upward to a bold, flared rim. Its presence is monumental, functioning as much as a piece of ceramic furniture as a decorative object.
Condition & Markings:
The vase is in excellent vintage condition. The glaze retains its original crystalline luster with no UV fading. The base is clearly embossed with "609-50" and the "W. Germany" origin mark.
