Design & Provenance:
This exceptional vase is a museum-grade example of the "Melba" pattern, one of the most prestigious decors produced by Kunstaardewerkfabriek Regina in Gouda, Netherlands. Bearing the W.B. founders' mark (Van der Want & Barras), this Model 438 vase dates to the peak of the Art Deco movement (circa 1927). It represents the transition from 19th-century Art Nouveau into the bold, architectural Modernism of the 1920s.
The "Gouds Mat" Aesthetic:
While much of Gouda’s output was glossy, the Melba pattern was designed specifically for Regina’s elite matte finish. This velvety glaze provides a deep, non-reflective background that allows the hand-painted botanical motifs to vibrate with color. The palette is a sophisticated blend of ochre, iron-red, and deep teal, executed with the crisp, exacting brushwork of the factory's master decorators.
Form & Presence:
At 27 cm in height, this is a large-format specimen. The silhouette is a refined Art Deco amphora, featuring a wide shoulder that tapers elegantly to a narrow base. This form was originally derived from the historic Rozenburg porcelain molds, giving the vase a sense of classical proportion rarely seen in standard earthenware.
Condition:
Report This piece is in immaculate, collector-grade condition. It is entirely free of chips, cracks, or restorations. The matte surface has been expertly preserved, maintaining its original velvety texture and vivid color saturation.
