Towards the end of the 19th century cabinet makers sought to come up with many different solutions to the steretypical bookcase. They wanted to create something more elegant and more aesthetically pleasing, whilst still retaining practicality, hence the evolution of the small open bookcase.
These bookcases became extremely popular and can be found in a huge variety of designs and quality now. As a general rule any with inlaid decoration and the metal support bases are regarded as the best of their type as they boast both elegance and practicality.
You will note that this particular revolving bookcase has some very attractive inliad decoration to the top, which in combination with the superbly figured mahogany makes it very elegant indeed. It also has a metal base and this adds to the practicality, making it very sturdy and fit for purpose.
