A finely executed Japanese cloisonné enamel plate measuring 12 inches in diameter, distinguished by its exceptional level of craftsmanship and richly layered decorative program. The central field is set against a rare and refined pale lavender ground, providing a soft luminous backdrop for an animated floral composition.
The design features large chrysanthemum blossoms in yellow, red, and gold tones, rendered with remarkable precision. The yellow chrysanthemums in particular display an unusually high level of detail, with finely articulated petal veining and subtle tonal modulation that reflects advanced enamel control and careful firing. Interspersed among the flowers are delicately observed butterflies, adding movement and visual lightness to the composition.
Surrounding the central panel is an elaborate series of geometric borders, including tightly patterned checkerwork, stylized floral motifs, and repeating petal forms, all executed with striking clarity and balance. The border designs demonstrate both technical confidence and aesthetic restraint, framing the central scene without overpowering it. The copper rim is neatly finished, reinforcing the sense of precision throughout the piece.
The reverse is equally impressive, featuring a bold turquoise blue ground densely filled with scrolling geometric patterns and a central medallion incorporating checkerboard elements and stylized floral forms. This level of attention to the reverse surface strongly indicates a high quality workshop piece, intended to be appreciated from all angles rather than as a purely functional object.
Altogether, this plate exemplifies sophisticated Japanese cloisonné production, combining painterly floral naturalism with complex geometric design. A highly decorative and collectible work, notable for its color harmony, technical refinement, and unusually strong reverse decoration, making it an excellent example for a serious collection of Meiji period cloisonné enamel.
