"Paiute Wikiup" Original Color Etching Aquatint Intagilo print by Roy Purcell (Artist’s Proof) – Framed Native American Cultural Artwork
This evocative Original Etching work titled "Paiute Wikiup" is an artist’s proof by Roy Purcell, a prominent Southwestern artist celebrated for his detailed etchings and depictions of Native American life and the Western landscape. The framed piece measures 21 3/4" H x 17 3/4" W x 1" D, with an image size of 13 1/2" H x 10" W.
The composition centers on a traditional Paiute wikiup—a dome-shaped shelter constructed from branches, brush, and other natural materials—rendered with striking detail and set against a rugged, atmospheric backdrop. The warm, sepia-toned palette evokes a sense of history and reverence, emphasizing the cultural and environmental context of the scene. Subtle textures and fine line work bring the wikiup and its surrounding landscape to life, potentially including stylized figures or natural elements like desert flora and trees.
Elegantly presented in a complementary gold-toned custom frame, this piece stands as both an artwork and a cultural homage. As an artist’s proof, it holds unique value, representing one of the limited impressions reserved by the artist for personal use or as a benchmark for quality.Good condition, minor imperfections; the etching has some age spots, and the frame has a few scratches.
Please note we have a separate listing of another Roy Purcell Original color Etching if you are interested in purchasing a pair.
About the Artist: Roy Purcell (b. 1936)
Roy Everett Purcell is an American artist acclaimed for his intaglio prints, etchings, watercolors, and drawings that explore the mythos and majesty of the American Southwest. Raised in rural Utah, Purcell’s deep connection to the desert and mountain landscapes profoundly shaped his artistic vision.
In 1966, while pursuing his MFA and working as a miner, he completed the iconic "The Journey" mural—a massive 2,000-square-foot spiritual and symbolic artwork painted on granite cliffs near Chloride, Arizona. This transformative project initiated a lifelong exploration of mythology, identity, and history through art.
Based in Las Vegas since 1970, Purcell has worked across media and served as director of both the Mojave Museum of History and Arts and the Southern Nevada Museum. His art is widely collected and particularly respected for its authentic representations of Native American culture, Western heritage, and the natural beauty of the desert Southwest.
