Description
Offered for sale is an authentic antique Victorian parlor rocking chair manufactured by J.S. Ford, Johnson & Company, one of the largest and most respected American chair makers of the late 19th century.
This chair dates to the turn of the 20th century, circa 1895–1905, based on its transitional Victorian design, construction methods, and surviving original labels. J.S. Ford, Johnson & Co. was founded in 1867, headquartered in Chicago by the 1870s, and ceased independent operations after bankruptcy in 1912. This piece predates that period and represents the company’s earlier decorative parlor furniture, produced before their well-known Mission-style dominance.
Dating & Historical Context (Antiques Roadshow–Style Attribution)
• Manufacturing period: Late Victorian / early Colonial Revival
• Estimated date: circa 1895–1905 (most likely around 1900)
• Rationale:
• Shell-and-scroll carved crest rail (late Victorian influence)
• Cabriole front legs and scroll/knuckle arms
• Solid wood seat (typical of parlor chairs of the era)
• Factory production consistency consistent with 1890s output
• Original paper maker label and inventory/style tag (“8331-3”) still present
Design & Materials
• Style: Victorian Parlor / Transitional Colonial Revival
• Wood: Solid hardwood (likely maple or birch), finished in a rich mahogany tone
• Seat: Solid wood
• Back: Shaped splat with carved shell-and-scroll crest
• Arms: Scroll / knuckle arms
• Legs: Cabriole front legs
• Rockers: Smooth and well-balanced
Marks & Labels
• Original J.S. Ford, Johnson & Company paper shop label (partially intact)
• Original inventory/style tag marked “8331-3”
• Labels are consistent with authenticated examples from the company’s Chicago-era production
Condition
• Structurally solid and sturdy
• Rocks smoothly with no wobble
• Finish wear on arm tops and edges consistent with age and use
• No repairs, breaks, or structural damage observed
• Labels remain intact but aged (expected for a 120+ year-old piece)
Rarity & Collectibility
• Victorian parlor rockers are collectible, but labeled examples by major manufacturers are far less common
• This style is scarcer than Ford-Johnson’s later Mission furniture
• Especially appealing to:
• Antique furniture collectors
• Historic home owners
• Interior designers seeking authentic period pieces
