The scene depicts fashionably dressed ladies seated on beach chairs along the shore at Scheveningen, a seaside resort near The Hague. Absorbed in reading and quiet conversation, the figures form a relaxed, informal grouping that conveys the unhurried rhythm of coastal leisure. On the opposite side of the composition, a lady bends forward to sample snacks offered by a young girl wearing a traditional Dutch bonnet.

Kaemmerer frequently returned to the Dutch coast, where he was inspired by the changing effects of light on sea and shoreline. His original 1874 oil on canvas, now in a private collection, exemplifies the 19th-century Dutch fascination with seaside leisure and atmospheric coastal landscapes—qualities thoughtfully echoed in this later interpretation.

The canvas bears a stamp on the reverse, dating from circa 1920s–early 1950s, which reads:
