S. Kirk & Son's Repoussé pattern is America's oldest sterling silver design (1828), known for its rich, all-over, raised floral motifs, created by hammering and chasing from the back (repoussé technique), resulting in deeply detailed, blooming flowers and a distinctively smooth, flat reverse side, making it a classic, highly sought-after heirloom from Baltimore silver artisans.
Origin & Technique: Introduced by Samuel Kirk in 1828, it uses the French "repoussé" method (meaning "pushed back") of hammering the design from the underside of the silver, then finishing the front with chasing for crisp detail.
Design: Features dense, intricate bouquets of various flowers, covering the entire surface, unlike later, more singular rose patterns.
Reverse Side: A hallmark is the smooth, flat, rounded reverse, providing a comfortable, seamless feel, which is ideal for spoon rings and everyday use.
Legacy: Became a benchmark for American silver, popular with Baltimore's wealthy, and is still produced (often by Kirk Stieff) today, representing a significant piece of U.S. silversmithing history.
Production History: It has remained in near-constant production since its debut. Following a 1979 merger, it was produced under the Kirk Stieff name.
Notable Use: Kirk silver pieces, including Repoussé, were used for high-profile events such as General Lafayette’s visit to Baltimore and the wedding of President James Monroe’s daughter.
In essence, it's a timeless, heavily floral pattern, handcrafted using a traditional metalworking technique that gives it a distinctive, luxurious, three-dimensional feel with a smooth back.
