This sculptural Anglo-Indian style throne chair presents a bold synthesis of colonial fantasy and indigenous craftsmanship. The dramatically carved back is centered by an oval upholstered medallion, framed within a richly ornamented surround and surmounted by a pair of opposing peacocks—traditional symbols of beauty, guardianship, and prestige in South Asian decorative arts.

The plank seat is supported by striking figural legs carved as standing lions, their expressive faces and stylized manes lending the chair a heraldic, almost mythic presence. Scrolled arm supports flow seamlessly into the animal forms, reinforcing the sense of movement and narrative throughout the design. Traces of layered polychrome paint—now worn to a highly desirable patina—attest to the chair’s original vibrant finish and enhance its sense of age and character.
