An exceptional late 18th century French marquetry commode, finely executed and signed by André-Louis Gilbert, one of the most respected Parisian ébénistes of the Louis XVI period.
This elegant breakfront commode is veneered in richly toned woods and adorned with finely detailed architectural and landscape marquetry panels, depicting classical ruins, trees, and distant monuments. The marquetry is of notably high quality, demonstrating refined drawing, careful shading, and excellent preservation.
The commode is fitted with a beautiful marble top, molded and contoured to follow the breakfront form, providing a refined contrast to the warmth of the wood veneers below. The façade is articulated with two drawers, each centered by original gilt bronze escutcheons and drawer pulls, crisply cast and finely chased.
The case is supported by elegant tapered legs terminating in gilt bronze sabots, while additional bronze mounts accent the corners and apron, enhancing both structure and decorative balance.
Stamped by André-Louis Gilbert, this commode exemplifies the sophistication and technical mastery of Parisian cabinetmaking during the late Louis XVI period.
