The scene shows two Roma figures in close embrace in the foreground, with water, a steep headland, and a sky full of birds behind them. The expressive faces, simplified forms, and high-contrast carving align with the “naive/visionary” intensity Balázs is known for, even when the subject is straightforward and human.
János Balázs was a Hungarian Roma poet and painter, frequently described in the context of naive/outsider art. He was born in Alsókubin (Dolný Kubín) in 1905 and died in Salgótarján in 1977. He had very little formal schooling, but became an intense self-educator through reading. He lived much of his life in or near the Roma settlement Pécskődomb in Salgótarján, often described as a reclusive, self-sufficient “hermit” figure.
