The chest is carved in high relief on all sides, depicting processional figures, attendants, and symbolic motifs associated with court life, ceremony, and hierarchy.

The lid and body are densely carved with repeating geometric patterns and stylized human figures wearing traditional garments and headdresses. These narrative reliefs are characteristic of Benin-inspired carving traditions, celebrating royalty, ancestry, and communal order. The craftsmanship suggests the work of skilled artisans using traditional hand tools, with intentional asymmetry and textural variation that add depth and authenticity.

Carved from solid hardwood, most likely iroko or a related African hardwood, the chest has a rich, warm patina developed through age and handling. The interior is plain and spacious, originally intended for storage of textiles, ceremonial objects, or valuables. Structurally solid and stable.
