Decorative pair of hand-painted silk tabletop folding screens in the Japanese byōbu tradition. This set consists of two matching two-panel screens (an isso, or pair), designed to be displayed together as a complementary composition—an approach historically used in Japanese interior design. Both screens are signed and stamped by the artist.
Dimensions (each screen):
24" H × 16.75" W × ¾" D
Each screen features a finely detailed landscape with flowering branches, water, and distant architecture, painted on silk with a warm golden ground. When placed side by side, the imagery reads as a harmonious seasonal scene, with visual balance across both screens.
These are tabletop-scale byōbu, sometimes referred to as decorative or tea-ceremony–scale screens, rather than full-height room dividers. Their compact size makes them ideal for display on a console, sideboard, mantel, or shelf.
The screens are housed in dark-stained wooden frames with applied brass hardware at the corners and sides, adding a refined decorative finish. The reverse sides are covered in patterned paper, consistent with traditional construction.
Age & Origin:
Likely early–mid 20th century (late Taishō to early Shōwa period), created for the Western export or decorative market, while still following traditional byōbu forms and motifs.
Condition:
Good vintage condition overall, with age-appropriate wear.
Light scuffing and wear to the silk borders and mats
Minor scattered spots and subtle discoloration consistent with age
No major tears or structural issues
Wear is visible on close inspection and has been photographed, but does not detract from display impact.
Sold as a matching pair.
