The four seasons
this splendid series of engravings features "the four seasons," color engravings by francesco bartolozzi (1727–1815) based on paintings by francis wheatley (1747–1801), two leading figures in the 18th-century european art scene.
these stippled-manner engravings are printed on laid paper with sepia ink and finely hand-colored.
engraver: francesco bartolozzi, born in florence in 1727, died in lisbon in 1815. One of the most famous and esteemed italian engravers, he successfully interpreted various intaglio methods: etching, burin, and stippled manner. A student of wagner in venice, he later moved to london, where he achieved international success and opened his own workshop.
francis wheatley, an english painter, was a master of genre scenes and female figures immersed in delicate, idyllic atmospheres. His narrative elegance finds full expression in these personifications of the seasons, depicted by young girls with dreamy gazes, refined in their clothing and symbolic poses.
