Beautifully … Read more A 19th century Barbizon style landscape painting by notable English artist James Vivien de Fleury (1847-1902) entitled Montfort, Brittany. Beautifully detailed scene with women washing along the canal bank in the foreground. Accurately detailed architectural renderings of the Tour du Papegault (a medieval tower built in 1389, an impressive remnant of the former castle) and the Eglise Saint-Louis Marie Grignon (built in 1850 Italian inspiration with a bell tower in the shape of a campanile) Oil on canvas in muted shades of green and blue. Signed lower right: J.V. de Fleury 1880. In good condition with light craquelure. Original giltwood frame is in good condition.

Vivien de Fleury was a London based landscape painter known for his Romantic oil and watercolor depictions of the English countryside and European scenes. His work was influenced by artists like Turner and Contstable. His subjects often included the English Lake District and Cotswolds, as well as locations from his travels in France, Switzerland, and Italy.
