Item :
beautiful vase or small box with a glazed ceramic lid, entirely decorated in black and white art deco style, with a cherub as the lid knob, holding a delicately flowing flower corolla, all finished with a rich vitrification due to the presence of high-quality feldspars. Signed under the base with a period cartouche featuring the flower vase mark and the g and k on the sides, standing for "gmunder keramik," created by michael powolny. In our volume, illustrated in the last photos, the mark is the third. They are arranged in chronological order and refer to all the sculptures from 1919 to 1950, the year the factory finally closed. By removing the cartouche underneath, one can certainly find the flower vase mark infused into the ceramic. Furthermore, the vase is published in the same volume mentioned, under catalog number wv143, as you can see in the last photos.
useful information for evaluating the item:
from an online search, we find that michael powolny boasts numerous auction results, all of which have achieved very high prices. The eight highest prices for the largest and most imported ceramics range from €26,000 to just over €50,000, plus a 25-30% buyer's premium. Even very small ceramics achieve very high auction results, with results ranging from €1,000 to €4,500, increasingly including a buyer's premium, for ceramics 10 cm tall, some even 5.5 cm tall. This gives an idea of the value of the ceramics created by this celebrated austrian artist, undoubtedly one of the most important figures in european ceramics in the first half of the 20th century. We all know how few ceramic sculptures from the early 20th century can achieve such high prices; only objects created by great artists and world-renowned designers can achieve such results.
final thoughts on the object:
this small vase is of unparalleled beauty; the ceramic body is hard and the glaze is very dense. The greatest value of this piece is the black and white decoration. Ceramics with this type of decoration are by far the most valuable by michael powolny. Here we have a vase with a white main body, four beautiful black spherical feet, and between each pair of feet, a black line runs vertically along the four sides of the vase to the all-black lid, featuring a cherub and a garland of white flowers, with black decoration on the flowers, all hand-painted with a brush. Truly fabulous!! this piece has an attribution mark,
i am sure that it is completely authentic and take full responsibility for any authenticity
