The relief is executed in pale stone or plaster and mounted against richly marbled paper, presented within a period giltwood frame with beaded inner molding and deep wine-colored mat.

Antinous, the beloved companion of Emperor Hadrian, was widely celebrated in antiquity and later became a favored subject during the Grand Tour era, when classical portrait reliefs and intaglios were collected as scholarly and decorative objects. The verso retains an old handwritten label identifying the subject as “Intaglio of the Capitoline Antinous,” adding historical context and collector appeal.
